Micromax to Launch Bharat Go, India’s First Android Go Phone

TCL Brings BlackBerry Motion to the US, Will Launch Two New BlackBerry Phones in 2018

BlackBerry-branded smartphones from Chinese smartphone maker TCL may not be the top choice for every Android enthusiast, but it seems the phones got enough attention to warrant follow-ups.

Last year’s BlackBerry KEYone, which launched at MWC 2017, was an attempt to merge BlackBerry’s security and enterprise strengths with the flexibility and popularity of Android. It’s the first of more to come: At its press conference during the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, the company announced that it’ll release “at least two” new smartphones later this year, each of which will have a physical keyboard.

BlackBerry also announced a new Bronze color variant for the BlackBerry KEYone at the event: The Bronze Edition KEYone. It sports a matte bronze look complemented by a textured black back panel, and drops the standard KEYone’s microSD card slot in favor of a second SIM tray for dual-SIM capabilities. That fits in well with the Bronze Edition’s target markets of Europe, Middle East and Asia, but right now, it seems unlikely that the dual-SIM variant will make its way to the US.

TCL gave a Q1 2018 launch window for the Bronze Edition KEYone, but hasn’t released pricing information.

TCL’s also bringing the previously launched BlackBerry Motion to US shores and pricing it at $449.99. The mid-range smartphone has a 5.5-inch FHD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 system-on-chip, 4GB RAM, 32GB of internal storage, water and dust resistance, and the promise of an Android 8.0 Oreo update “later this year”.

The BlackBerry Motion will be available for purchase starting January 12 at Amazon and BestBuy.com.

Apple Wins Appeal Over Patent Infringement Against University of Wisconsin

Some of the cases Apple is involved with, especially related to patent infringement, take years to complete. And that’s the case with this particular one. Back in 2015, Apple was ordered to pay millions of dollars to the University of Wisconsin, as the university was able to plead its case that Apple’s A-series chips (the A7 and A8, specifically in this case) infringed on a method of boosting the efficiency of integrated circuits. Apple, of course, appealed, and things have been a bit topsy-turvy ever since. The bill Apple was facing was originally set at $862 million. After that, a subsequent judge considered the valuation of that determination and reduced the payout from Apple’s end, down to $234 million. The determination was that Apple’s infringement of the patents was ruled inadvertent. Report: HTC Plans to Limit the Number of New Smartphones in 2018 Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you probably know that HTC’s smartphone business hasn’t been doing all that well lately. Quarter after quarter, the company’s put out earnings reports  that show it’s losing millions of dollars  as a result of poor sales and high overhead. HTC tried to alleviate the issues by selling off some of its handset division to Google, and a new report in DigitTimes  states it’s planning to limit the number of new smartphones it ships this year. The report, citing “industry sources”, claims that HTC will focus on researching, developing, and marketing a limited number of devices in 2018. The cutback’s intended to help reduce the amount of overhead, but also to free up resources for its mid-range and high-end device lineups.
